The only drawback to fir is the weight. With the grain orientation you have you won't have optimal stregnth but the paddle will be plenty strong enough, and then some. I broke my favorite cedar paddle in the surf a couple of months ago, and I've not got around to building another because I like my fir paddle nearly as well and I can do chin ups on it.
