I'm working on #6-#13 concurrently.
I think Don Beale is up to #60, but he's also selling them commercially.
The most important thing to find in a board for your first paddle is beautiful straight grain--if it's really curly or knotty, the carving process will be so frustrating you won't ever want to try it again.
If you must use poorer wood, save it for a later paddle--the knowledge that you enjoy using your first paddle will get you through the bad spots. Oh, and plane very shallow in this stuff, or do all your "carving" with power tools!!
