Also remember that the point where the shaft transitions to the blade will also be a point of concentrated stress. If you have some wood with bad parts, try to locate them in the middle of the shaft or the middle of the blade where the stresses will be more distributed.

: Here's an example of what not to do. This Greenland type paddle was carved

: ultra-light, but not much fun to paddle with (too much flex for my
