On the topic of paddles and construction mistakes, here's a pic of a wooden euro paddle that while I was cross-cutting I cut across the back of the blade/shaft in two spots (about 1/8" deep) before I realized what I had just done. The method I use for carving wooden paddles is fairly neanderthal, by gluing up 1x2's for the blades onto the shaft material, then with the circular saw set to depths given by Nick's side view of his paddle, I cut perpendicular to the blade at even stations in order to make the two blades identical, then chisel out the majority of each blade and finish carve with a 4" grinder.
This paddle will be fine, but will be given ample reinforcement (lots of glass) at this particular spot. And I'll always carry a spare, just in case.
