: Most come in non-metric thicknesses --
: is 1/8" OK for the deck once glassed? I would imagine the hull is
: best constructed from 3mm or 4mm okoume.
I used 4mm Okoume for the hull and 1/8" maple for the deck. The plans
have two sets of lines for cutting out the forms depending on the
thickness of your plywood.

: Have never scarfed plywood before. Has anyone ever used the Scarffer from
: West System? Looks like a nifty attachment for the circular saw. Maybe
: planing is just as easy . . .

Haven't seen the Scarffer. The instructions for the Cirrus come with instructions on how to make a jig for scarfing with a circular saw, but I
just used a plane. It was easy and did a nice job as long as I was paying
attention. Towards the end I got overconfident and careless and made some
ugly scarfs.

: Are there any real cost savings in going from plans vice a kit or is it
: actually more expensive buying all the stuff separately? I have to admit
: that some satisfaction would be derived from starting with blank sheets of
: plywood.

For me the appeal was being able to buy things as I needed them. So
rather than having to put out $700 (or whatever) all at once it was a
couple hundred here, a couple hundred there. Made me feel like I wasn't
spending a lot. :-)
