Hey Mike,
The photo is grainy enough on my monitor to be confusing to me, too. The last set of pics probably gives a better idea of what's really going on. I also noticed in the first picture posted that the boat appears out of alignment, but it is just lens distortion from the camera.
The tubes that form the Maroske fittings are removed eventually. There are lots of references to them on the board, I learned them first-hand from Shawn Baker. It seems like a PITA when making them, but the results are worth the effort.
