It's apparent to me, now, that I haven't followed proper forum guidelines and have attempted to change the subject of threads started by other builders. I can assure you all that this was completely unintentional, and won't happen again. I apologize to those whose feet I've stepped (or stomped) on, but quite often, when reading a post, a light bulb goes off and I just start typing. I'll be more careful where I post a message in the future. I guess that I should have taken forum etiquette in school.
Anyway, my latest thoughts on kayak building have been concentrated on short, wide, fishing or recreation kayaks. Although I'm also currently building a Cirrus, having an assortment of designs for different purposes is a good thing. Since I like the look of the Cape Ann scaled into a rec boat, I thought I'd try the same scaling on a S&G to produce a short, wide kayak. This pic is the design that I used to build a 4 foot model, which was cut out and wired together yesterday. If the shape looks familiar to you, that's because it is Nick's S&G Guillemot, but scaled up by 1.33 times and shortened by 0.66 to produce a boat that is 28" wide and just over 11 feet long. I'll post a pic of the model when it gets further along.
There are not many sources for plans for these short rec boats, other than Nick's Little Auk, CLC Mill Creek, Shearwater Eider and a few others. I like this version of the Guillemot and may build it full size someday. First, I'd like to paddle the fat Cape Ann SOF I'm building and possibly build a plywood version of it, as well.
Follow the link to another short boat - SelwayFisher 12.5 ft. Esk, definately unique looking.
Any other designs like this out there?
