Overlap? I may be wrong, but it looks to me as if the loom and the center of the blades are one piece. I'd say the problem was the grain orientation. With flat-grained wood, you get runout as soon as you taper it in any direction, which can result in splits between the growth rings. Edge grain wood doesn't have this problem, which is why I use it exclusively. It's not as pretty, but it's stiffer and more durable.
