: reading through the last threads on epoxy/carbon coamings a couple guys
: mention them softening in the heat. Is this common?,,would other epoxies
: be better for the application or using white fill coats, or vinylester
: resins? I know that obviates the cool carbon finish but if you can't
: afford the exposure that sounds like a problem.

I mentioned this earlier with an all glass/epoxy coaming and may have been misleading. I think the softness may be, in large part, a function of thickness. Mine is 8 layers of 6 oz cloth. That was just less than an 1/8" thick and was a complete guess on my part as to adequacy. Even when heated (sun), it is not noticable unless I am leaning hard on it getting in or out of the boat. The coaming lip will slightly flex with pressure. It does not deform on its own in the sun. It may also be a function of age. I haven't paddled the boat in a while. It may do this flexing less now. Also, for what it's worth, the coaming is painted a light almond color.
