We did everything by the book. The cockpit is bit short but I can get out fine in a wet exit and have to some what snake myself out on dock after long paddles. I did add curved stripped knee hooks in to the cockpit opening. We made it by the book because someone had given me a Brooks heavy neo spray skirt from a plastic surf kayak, fit was perfect.
