Why not veneer instead?

Perhaps you should consider buying thin wood veneer. You can cut the stuff out to any pattern you want and epoxy it under the glass. It seems to be easy to use and it will look like you did an inlay. The cost is not high and it will last as long as your boat without fading. I've seen pictures of some beautiful boats done that way and your pattern sounds like it lends itself to the technique.
