The rear deck of my kayak has a peaked center. What I have found that works good for me is a double length of bungee running fore to aft on both sides of the rear deck just above the shear line, with a criss cross "X" patern going from side to side. When I place the paddle under the side bungees and then under the criss cross it holds it very well under rough conditions. Whatever you come up with, practice with it in varying conditions to make sure it does a good job. No matter how good you can roll you will always want a paddle float for a back up. Fatigue and conditions can sometimes be unpredictable.
