Correct. When I learned this it was called the "cowboy" method, and IMHO with practice is at least as good as if not better than the paddle float tecnique.
It requires practice, but of course there is no gear to forget or lose, and it is much faster than fooling around with a float.
Try it a few times in shallow water, I think you will find you get the knack of it pretty quickly.
