I believe that's who I talked to. He said it wets out clear, but you have to be careful, and recommended using a squeegee and said you have to do a precoat. Well, being that I already did the precoat, and I squeegeed the precoat I figured I would try it. I've done layups for street rods and that's the way I did them, using a squeegee to push the 'glass into the fabric. In fact sometimes I would not even use a roller or brush, just apply the whole thing w/ a squeegee. It's a bit messier, but it's sort of like floating concrete. Of course that was not something that I was going to paint. I had planned with the 5oz to roll out the resin with a foam roller, use a grooved roller to press the resin into the cloth and get out the bubbles, then float the resin with a squeegee to further press it into the cloth. Well, not really "float" it, but more "imbed" it. It seems to me that if the weave is showing then the cloth is not getting fully saturated. My understanding is that it's made of the same stuff as the 6oz, just woven in a tighter weave. I think the tight weave requires a bit more saturation to get it to go clear. We could get into the science of reflection and refraction of light, but I think ya know what I mean without all that. Besides I didn't do too good in science... or history or math or english for that matter!
He did say to make sure I let the weave show a bit on the first coat, and then do a second coat after it sets. Of course I think that's more of a basic step for any 'glass, but apparently it's critical with the 5oz.
What I will do with my test piece is soak some cloth in resin for a few minutes, and then lay out the wet cloth on a piece of wood and squeegee it down. That will guarantee that we can't say the resin didn't soak into the cloth if it still shows the weave. I'll let you know what happens, but it will be next week before the cloth arrives.
Good grief, I wish you could 'glass the inside first, then the part everyone sees after you make all your mistakes.
