While on the subject - I am about to start building a canoe paddle. It seems that most builders recommend using edge grained wood rather that flat sawn for kayak paddles but information on canoe paddle building seems to recommend flat sawn boards. I have made both canoe paddle and a kayak paddle using flat sawn boards because I didn't have anything else and they seem to be fine although I can see how they may not be as strong as edge grained paddles. What should I be using?
