: Hi, I'm building a kayak from kevlar and fiberglass, and am wondering about
: the layup. It's not a whitewater kayak, and i dont plan on hitting a lot
: of rocks or anything. I have enough material for the following layup:
: glass mat, kevlar, glass mat, kevlar. Will these four layers provide
: enough strength? Can i get away with using less layers on the top? I was
: thinking i could maybe leave out the bottom layer of glass mat on top.
: thanks for your opinions.

Jake,

I agree with C. - don't use mat. How heavy is the Kevlar you have (oz/yd^2)? A good resource for this sort of project is The Boat Builder's Manual, by C. Walbridge. I just checked abebooks.com, and they have several copies in the $10 range.
