even tho harder to repair, i would think that stopped tenons are far more structural both longitudinally and sectionally. the skin tension aids in keeping it all together even without lashing.
to me, pegs across a likely working tenon are looking for problems (as well as being hard to look for in skin-on repairs).
a slight downside might be capillary action in the joint allowing exposed endgrain of both ribs and gunwale to be compromised over time. might be an excuse to preoil the pieces before ass'y. but as this whole series of jts is usualy above the w/l is probably no problem unless the yak is stored upside down right after use.
