Yes, I sanded the veneer as thin as I could, particularly at the edges. After an initial seal coat I mixed a small batch of epoxy and waited until it started to kick before going around the edges to build up a "ramp" to the edge of the veneer. Another light sanding and then I glassed. After two fill coats you can hardly detect the edge by touch and when I do the final sanding and fill coat I think it will blend in completely.
