: I used a dual action sander and an inline sander. I was more comfortable with
: these tools than the planer. Used 60 grit at first, working up to 120. The
: inline sander made faring a breeze. I have since played with the planer
: enough to try it next time. Problems with sanding are noise, dust, and
: sand-paper adds cost to the boat.

: Keep in mind that this is my first boat, so I am only a beginner. I have
: worked with wood for years and have found that air tools make short work
: of most projects. However, hand tools seem to be more satisfying overall.

: Good luck with your project.
After building my first bnoat, a cedar strip canoe, I found the plane method seemed to do more damage to the wood than actually fair it. So for both the canoe and the Guillymont I am now in the process of building, I found my belt sander made light work of fairing and the results were great. If you golight and keep the sander in motion, you should not have any problem. It was a real time saver.
