Ditto on the belt sander. I pretty much followed Vaclav's method of block planing first, holding it almost 45 degrees to the joint, and running it down the length to take the hill off between a few strips. Only was necessary around the shear areas. Then belt sander with 100grit, rather than the 80 suggested. Scary at first, but very easy once I got the hang of it, great time saver. Then fairing board after that. Was was able to do most of deck in one evening, glass the next.
