I'm surprised that you feel it's taking so long. Usually I start with a hand scraper, then I plane as you do and I too run into some strips that it wants to bite into. . . By the time I get into sanding with the ROS it goes pretty fast. I use a DeWalt with 60 grit to start. I would say it take s no more than a few hours to complete the sanding of a hull and about 4 discs. I. Then go with hand sanding with the grain using 100 grit. That's as fine as I go on a stripper.
