I agree with you that there are usually best methods for different builders to accomplish a given task. Sometimes, because we aren't all the same, the methods can be different, or simple variations of a given theme. Obviously your methods work for you. The only thing I can add to what you've said is that one needs to be able to recognize variations and differences in methods and be able to apply any that work to accomplish the task. Don't get locked in to thinking that there is only one "best" way. There are many best ways. One must be adaptable when faced with choices. Wetting the wood to raise dings, dents, scratches, and hairs is an old trick that works very well. I'm glad you mentioned it. I do it without even thinking about it. Just part of the overall project.
