Hi Ken. First off, welcome to the group. Here's my opinion. Part of it depends what you like about the sport. If you just like to get out on the water then I would build the simplest, cheapest boat you can. Then, when you get a little further along, you can build something more specialized and let a friend paddle the first one. Believe me, you'll eventually want two.
