Epoxy: fairing lumpy glass?

I'm making a layed-up coaming lip using glass,C/F,and hybred cloth. I used foam to lay the glass on as a form per Vaclav's method. Everything went well but the multi layers of fabric are lumpy, with highs and lows. I could use fairing compound and used pigmented epoxy to get a nice smooth look but I wanted to leave the hybred carbon/kevlar look.
Has anyone had success fairing with clear epoxy? I know I can add a little fumed silica but I don't how much I can use before the epoxy gets cloudy. I also remember reading about using semi cured epoxy to fill divots but I am filling more than just divots.
any ideas appreciated-----------------
