I did the intitial layup and like you did, ended up with some lumps and bumps and a generally unfair combing. That said, I just took a fairing board to it, sanding everything down until I had a fair surface. That meant going through some of the layers of CF, but I then did a couple more layers of cloth. I still have a pretty heavily textured surface but after I did the fill coats, probably 3 or 4 and then sanded it out. It came out great. I love the look.
