Perhaps a good precaution would be...

...to epoxy the struts to the hatch covers before cutting them out. You could start cuts on each side to help locate the struts, then finish the cuts after the struts are glued in place. Also, if it's necessary to heat a hatch lid, it would probably be better done in an over, where the temperature can be controlled and the heat would be more even than when using a heat gun.
