I'll take a stab at it.
Their web server can see that the request for the image came from a page
which is not hosted by them. It can then decide not to send it to you.
Many sites don't like you to link directly to images on their sites, since
it is effectively stealing their bandwidth.
When you paste the url in directly, their server is happy, and it sends you
the image. When you then go back to the KBBS page, the image is there because
the browser has cached it, and can fill in the page itself.
I don't know exactly how accurate that theory is, but I'll bet it's close.
