Hi Ethan, it sounds like you read KayakCraft. You have to remove that part of the station mold in order to make way for the stem. Right? The purpose of a station mold is to guide the strips. Well, the strips will ride snug against the stem so where would the mold go anyway. Some builders don't even bother with the end stations but I found them handy as a guide for shaping the stem.

Here's a shot of my stern end-form. The breakaway seam is hidden behind the lower strip. You can see the tabs that hold the seam together though. Gotta put the kids to bed.
