Whew, these are tough questions... the pictures aren't that recent - they are about two years old. Those stems got shaved down pretty thin. I carefully layed out the geometry on posterboard and the mold in the picture just tuned out that way; I didn't make any other special modification to it. Everyone has a tough time visualizing these stems. Don't sweat it. You'll be an expert builder by the time you get to those strips. The hull won't bend-in too sharply in that area; in fact the strips won't want to bend around at all - most builders have to use a heat gun or steam in that area but that is a different topic that you can address when it happens.
