: Why didn't you just lash the deck beams on the other side (i.e., fore vs. aft
: of the beam)? It really doesn't make any structural difference.

Hi Brian

Sorry, I missed this post earlier... and was cutting the ends of the Morris frame, 'lil boat #2, and just came back to it...

On my lashings ( Starr frame #1 ), I drilled through the deck beams ( width ) and then through the apummaqs on either side of the D-B. Then after about 4 winds on the lashing, I used a lashing across the beam to pull the two together. I believe Mark called them Frapping turns. ( fig. 2.26 - 2.28 on pages 38 and 39 of his book )

In those pictures he also shows his rib mortice right under the deck beam. I tried to avoid this, basically because these two little boats are using 2" apummaqs rather than 3 1/2" and I was afraid of getting it too weak in those areas. So, when I figured the distances for the beams in ralation to the ribs I came up with a couple that were pretty close. So, I ran the lashing beyond the rib mortice figuring that it would not weaken the area any more and also that the frapping would make it a tighter fit with the bigger angle.

The lashing holes ended up being right at the same level as the bottom of the rib mortices. ( having angled them downward to aid in pulling the beams downward to strengthen the angled fit ) Does that make sense??

Anyway, with the deck-beams 3/4" below the top edge of the apummaqs and the rib mortices comeing up around 3/4" into it, that was cutting it pretty close...

Hope that explains it. ??

Now, back to work on the Morris frame.. Will be making the rib-mortice jig tomorrow, but for tonight I'm trying to finish the shaping of the apummaqs.

ps ( these two boats are approx. 12' x 18" for my two oldest Grandsons. from 50 to 75 lbs. )
