deadrise measures how flat or sharp the bottom is, when viewed from the front or back.

in boats, deadrise is measured in degrees, with a perfectly flat boat (e.g. a box) having a 0 degree deadrise, and a deep V hull having a lot of desdrise (up to 60 degrees typically)

in some kayaks we can shortcut an give the measurement in inches. if the boat is sitting flat and level on a table, measure from teh table to the chine and call that the deadrise.
