: Interesting! How hard/tough are these? A lot of SOF people are looking for a
: suitable material for making fittings, while avoiding bone/ivory. Will
: this stuff hold up to a lot of abuse?

Absolutely no idea how strong they'll be. But I'm sure to find out. The minicel foam 'n glass handles are very tough (and light) I would guess the clay would be similar. They're basically fiberglass handles, and I have only really thought of their purpose being to lift the end of a kayak. Although they do sell every color known to man including glow-in-the-dark or sparkled stuff. I've used some of these bright colors for fishing lure (jig) bodies. The one in the picture only has epoxy on it and portions are flaking off. This just tells me that they need to be roughed up a bit with some 100 grit before I put the seal coat on. After I lay the glass (I'll try some of that satin stuff) and it cures, I'll test their strength. My guess is that they'll be plenty strong.
Any other parts/pieces/recipes that you can think of that needs to be put in the oven???? Are you thinking what I'm thinking... recessed fittings... knobs for Chip's vault style hatches... bone accents on Greenland sticks...
This stuff is really easy to work with, hopefully it will accept fiberglass/epoxy well and be strong enough to take the abuse kayakers dish out.
We'll see...
