You should be able to drop them from the DEM link in my previous post. They are listed by state-county-USGS quad. For some areas, they come in two flavors: 30m and 10m. The 10m data is the highest resolution (more detail), but will be bigger to download (2-3M). The files are compressed (tar.gz), but 3dem will read those directly without you uncompressing them. You can request a set of CDs with all DEM files for a given state, but that can be pricey ($200-$500, depending on the state, I think). Single downloads are free and usually cover most of the area I'm interested in anyway.

If you have a pretty fat pipe to download over and no download limits, complete topo collections are pretty cheap from topowest.com. I dropped all of Idaho (over 4G of tif files) for $40, for example. Of course, you can find commercial topo sets for about this price too, but not all states are available commercially.
