I'm with you on small batches - my usual is 4.5 oz's. The thing that kicked this idea was my latest batch. I was farting around, trying to get the stems just so, and so took a little longer than usual. Poured out a little more, and it was working nicer than normal. Realized what was happening, so I quickly finished that section and left the rest in the cup. It turned to sludge in no time. I don't want to be anywhere near the kick either - esp. after the 'incident' while saturating the inside glass (all worked out fine, but I did float a small spot or two.) But those few tablespoons of fill coat were so nice to work, just a little bit thicker, not a gooey thing at all. I think you mentioned cooler temps earlier. That's the kind of thing I'd go for, but A/C'ing the garage may get some questions from the wife.
The "Epoxy Book" came with my order, and I agree it's a valuable read. It's part of what got this idea in my head. If anyone else wants it, it's available for download at http://www.epoxyhelp.com . It can be had at the main system three website too, but here they don't ask for contact information.
: I would never want to still be applying epoxy as it starts to kick. I'm in
: the small batches, more coats camp. Seems to let me I get the weave filled
: more evenly with no runs, no more than is needed and doesn't need much
: sanding. I think it takes less time in the whole process and probably less
: weight. I would only try high viscosity for very thick coating of flat
: pieces I could coat while level. You can apply more to spots where it
: doesn't cover but the only way to get it off where it's too thick or sags
: is more elbow grease. You should get their manual, very good info.
