You plan of sanding with 220 and finishing with a finer wet paper by hand is exactly whta I do.
A quick dry sanding will reviel any drips or minor imperfections between coats. Then you can go to the wet paper.
(don't try this at home!) I use my Mekita 1/4 sheet pad sander for the wet sanding. I just wet the area with a sponge. So far I'm still alive and I've done that for many years.
Prior to you last coat, wet sand super fine - like 500 or so and you'll get an even nicer finish. One of the advantages of wet sanding is that it allows you to coat every day. Many times the varn. has not set up hard enough to dry sand - it just grinds into little clumps.
