Hi Patsy -
For drilling a hole in hard wood or metal, you can get off to a good start by clamping the object to something, edge of workbench, one of those B&D Workmates, etc. Then take a nail set (just a long hard pointed piece of metal that looks like a pencil) and whack it into the piece so you create a slight impression, or dimple. That will help your drill bit stay centered as you start to drill the hole. A nail set will cost you a few dollars at your local Home For All of My Discretionary Income.
