: Was just trolling the archives, and saw a message from Jim Kozel regarding
: using a fanny pack as the basis for a backband. Sounds like a heck of an
: idea.
: Question: Has time on the water been kind to this idea?
Well, I tried the idea and it worked OK, but I was using a very beefy Chouinard fanny pack with padding almost identical to a Rapid Pulse back-band with the addition of padded supports around the hips. I stopped using it because it became something of a hassle to remove it for bike riding and hiking. But in the kayak it worked just fine. If you take this approach, you'll need bungies or straps to hold it in position, rigged from underneath so you have access to the compartments. Without the bungies, it will keep falling down unless there's a foam wedge or something similar to hold it in position. This particular pack also had adjustment straps that conveniently connected with the Rapid Pulse attachment buckles. I may revisit the idea since I really liked being able to just reach behind and open a compartment for a sandwich, camera, or Rolling Rock.
