: Hello all,
: I have resumed work on my S&G (SK '94 Greenland style) over the last 4
: weekends. I anticipate being ready to launch in June sometime. I have all
: sorts of odds and ends to make including a rack for the camper shell of my
: truck.

: Here is my question....
: What is the preferred position for transporting a wooden kayak such as I am
: building? I have been all over the Internet since last May researching my
: building and have seen kayaks oriented all manner of ways.

: Here are my specifics....
: For the most part I won't be travelling far to kayak. Fifteen minutes in city
: traffic mostly 45 MPH will be the norm. Ocassionally I would make a 45
: minute to one hour trip on the interstate for different paddling areas. My
: truck is a Dodge RAM 50 with a flush camper shell. Small truck.

: Here are my plans....
: I plan to make a very simple rack by bolting 2 x 4 s to my camper shell
: (sealing the connections of course). I have an idea of making two carrier
: brackets that can be attached and removed from the 2 x 4 s as needed. I
: don't see why they shouldn't basically be shaped like the cradles I built
: the boat in. I could put a piece of wood or bungee/rope across the top. I
: also plan to tie off the bow and stern to the truck ends with rope. I have
: seen people without these but I want to be careful.

: So you can tell I am leaning towards orienting the boat in the upright
: position for transporting. I would be interested to know if that is
: preferred or not for a Greenland style kayak.

: Thanks,

: Tony
We have had long postings on this subject before and this is my cliff notes..
1. Up down or side ways ok with good saddles
2. ALWAYS use rope or straps, keep your straps and locking mechs clean
3. Tie or strap kayaks to the rack
4. ALWAYS use the bow and stern tie downs, You may be going down the road at 30

mph but add 25mph head wind = 55
Great idea about cover, I live in the desert, forgot about that stuff comes from the sky. Lots of Ideas on racks try search.
