I built a Ch16 with 1/2" taken off the sheer, no deck glass. The hull had 4oz s-glass with 4oz polyester cloth over that (soaks up a lot less than dynel/Xynole.) the kayak weighed 50lbs. Sure it's tough to oyster shells,,,but the stern will wear into the wood if it didn't have a thick layer there,,and two layers of 4oz s-glass on the bottom only would probably have cut 5 lbs off the boat if the 4oz polyester cloth was never used.
