Hi Bradley. I played around a little with Vectacloth which is the polypropelene fabric from www.defenderus.com I guess I found that source from Rob Macks. I think it's under $4/yd so it's simple enough to test out. I may apply it as an abrasion strip in select areas on the bottom of my boats but I wouldn't want to do a whole boat that way...

Wood-core fiberglass is pretty nice to work with; it can be planed, sanded, etc. I use a satin weave(smooth) fiberglass fabric that is even nicer to tool. On the other hand, polypropelene fuzzes-up when you try to tool it. The different layup possibilities are fun to play with. Depending on what you are building, I would look into about 4oz of glass on the whole boat with an abrasion resistant fabric maybe as a second layer on the bottom of the hull.
