a friend and I shipped an Olympic Van Dusen K-4 (12metres) to South Africa in 1992. we built a crate from 1x3 stringers built onto diagonally braced cells lined with 2" stryofoam and covered with 1/4" plywood on alternating faces of the box. Very stiff, not too heavy (two of us put it in the truck that picked it up.

It arrived in RSA in perfect condition, only (legend has it) to be destroyed a week later in a trailering accident or some other mis-deed....
