Lincoln Park is not too far away from the upper reaches of the Passaic River and a SOF would be good for these waters. In a few years, once your grandson obtains his driver's licence, the possibilities expand immensely. Many reservoirs allow kayaks, etc; plenty of protected areas on the Atlantic coast;
and more rivers to explore.
