Hi guys,

I've just got my first layer of Varnish on my kayak, phew, finally. It look good, it has been in a apperent state of perpetual mostly sanded for quite a while. To think I was going to build two kayaks the winter before last... I'm so close to being done the first now two years later.

Anyways, the question of the moment is regarding sanding between coats of Varnish. Do you have to, it the varnish is still somewhat green? the instructions on the can say somthing to the effect of "light sanding between coats is recomended, and is required after 16 hrs or dry time".

Is the light sanding for a better bond, is it to help remove any dust that's fallen in to the vanish, etc?

I spent alot of time sanding the epoxy prior to varnishing, and if it is reasonable would like to avoid that again between the first and second coats of Varnish.

I'm thinking that I could wait until not tacky and varnish again with the next coat. Then later this week I can give it a light sanding, and put a thin coat on with a rag.

Oh yes, I accidently bought the High gloss varnish, I'm assuming I can get a small can of matt, or semigloss and use that as the final coat? Anyone had any bad experinces trying that?
