That Reg Lake is one clever guy...
That sounds interesting enough to try, along with Rick's strip-built conical tower. Except, I'm thinking maybe instead of cutting an "X", maybe add one more slice and end up with 6 pieces of pie rather than 4 -- I'll have to think through the geometry of that one a little more.

: Cut an oval of neoprene to fit your cockpit. Build a cylinder
: "tower" the size to fit your torso..

: Cut a big "X" in the deck, the diameter of the tower. Turn each
: "quarter pie-shaped" piece up. Cut 4 zigzags into the bottom of
: the tower. Glue each tower zigzag into the middle of one of the pie-shaped
: pieces from the deck. There will be a zigzag seam running around the
: tower, and no seam at the deck to leak into your lap!
