Myrl,

Unlike epoxy, varnish must be fully hardened before another coat is applied. Varnish hardens through solvent evaporation. If a coat is applied over "green" varnish, it will be green forever. You also should sand lightly between coats to create a mechanical bond between layers. Again, unlike epoxy, coats of varnish do not chemically bond to each other. If you want to do quick coats without sanding between, you could consider LPU or other two or three part polyurethanes.
