I'm using large rectangular "abrasive pads" for hand sanding (Maroon, Gray, and White...three different "grits") that I got at an auto supply store, and I'm also using these three different grit 5" round pads with my ROS. I get the ROS pads (with hook & loop backing) here:

I think the green pads are too coarse for most boat building applications, but the maroon, gray, and white pads are perfect.
