Yes this is in fact not the varnish stage, it´s the Lacquer stage. I use to put on one layer of a special lacquer, a PU-lacque that my epoxi-supplier has developed. The lacque has extremely high scratching resistance and no odour.
The shining factor is at top.
I use an epoxi from NM-system, its a swedish mfg that has very high quality.
