Hi Simon,
Buy one copy of the Australian Amature Boatbuilder Magazine from your local newsagent. The magazine is full of supplier's advertisments which would help you depending on which state you moved to. I am aquainted with a chap who built a Great Auk using pine strips which he cut himself. I do not know what it cost him. I had Cedar Strips (not bead and cove) quoted at 95 cents a metre.
If you are in Queensland, try Bayside Wooden Boats, Boat Craft Pacific, and Cedar Sales (all who advertise in the magazine I referred to above) for more information.
Kayak materials, such as foot braces, rudders, seats, covers, etc, are expensive, but you must double the american dollars to get Australian $ and add US$30 postage to bring anything in (not counting duty if applicable). However, if you make them yourself, the cost comes right down. For example, a kayak shop quoted me $78 for a foot brace, but I made the Nick Schade wooden one for very little.
Good luck,
John
: Hi - I've just moved to Australia and am researching the building of a Night
: Heron & Guillemot S.
: Could anyone point me at where I could get the strips from? Ideally I'd like
: to get them cut into 3/5" x 1/4" strips with coves & beads
: as it is not practical to do this where I live.
: What type of local wood is suitable?
: I'm also trying to cost the materials. Could anyone share their breakdown of
: costs? In particular a breakdown of the cost to build in Australia.
: Many thanks.
: Simon
