: Hi, Tim here.
: I bought that Veritas spokeshave. Unfortunately I have not put it to wood yet
: to test it. But what I liked about it was the 180 degree rotatable toe for
: convex and concave worksurfaces.
I've found that the "convex" setting works well for most concave surfaces, too (with adjustments to cutting depth). If I were to suggest one improvement on this tool, it would be to offer a wider sole for use on flat surfaces. Ultimately, I may make one.
: It feels good in the hand and it seems very easy to adjust. I have not tried
: it on a wetstone to see if it needs truing - I should probably do that
: soon.
On advantage of the small blade is that it's not likely to be too far out of true. It's a good thing, since the A2 steel is really hard and taking off any appreciable amount of material is a serious chore. It also requires more effort to sharpen, but it holds an edge REALLY well. Once you have established a good edge, all it requires is an occasional honing on a 4000 grit (or finer) stone to keep it shaving sharp.
