In south Louisiana, more than a few locals have referred to my kayaks and canoes as "pirogues" and they don't come close to resembling a traditional pirogue. I find the term used as a colloquial name for a small boat without a motor. A small boat with a motor is generally referred to as a "bateau". David's boat would cerainly be called a pirogue in LA even though it somewhat deviates from the traditional design. I can't wait to see David pole it standing up as some do. Some pirogues I've seen poled scare me. They're relatively narrow with only a few inches of freeboard.
